It is an iconic trail in Mauritius throughout a UNESCO World Heritage Site with amazing views of the southwestern part of the island. People, who are new to hiking, can do the trail till P-14 since it still offers a couple of nice viewpoints before reaching the top. If you are going to continue after P-14 make sure you have proper hiking shoes. I saw many people wearing ordinary sneakers and struggling while descending. It is a very popular trail, I saw dozens of hikers there.
Not advisable with kids after P-14. In May 2022 I did not see any attached ropes for assistance.
Trail segments:
P-01 - P-14. The trail is very easy to follow. It is well laid and wide till P-14. You will see a couple of nice viewpoints at P-12 and P-14.
P-14 -P-21. At P-14 you will see a warning sign saying that the trail is becoming more difficult and should not be attempted by inexperienced climbers. The trail here is narrow and a bit steep.
P-21 - Top. It is a climb where you have to use your hands to reach the top with the cross.
A parking location is -20.460025, 57.327524. It is a dirt road from B9 to the parking location but sedans can do it.
Must-have gear:
1) High-cut hiking shoes
2) 2 liters of water, electrolytes
3) Sun protective clothing or sunscreen cream (there is no shade after P-21)
4) windbreaker depending on the weather
Recommended gear:
1) Gloves (useful after P-21)
2) mosquito repellent
