This is by far one of the most picturesque and 'fulfilling' hikes I've completed in France since moving here from Australia around 25 years ago. It had a little bit of everything thrown in (a beautiful creek, a waterfall, abandonned train tunnels, clifftop walks, oak, ceder, and pine forests, quaint villages, green plains with hay bails, and great weather), but it was really made 'fantastic' by being able to see so many chevreuil (even inside the tunnels where they were looking for cooler air), lizards, birds, bats, and even a giant herd of goats on the path not far from La Bertinière (near the goat farm of course!).

My partner and I started the hike by going downhill in the direction of the tunnels (NOTE: this would be regional/national treasure if it were converted into a modern day scenic train route... it's THAT AMAZING!). We both agreed at the end of the hike that it may have been better to start walking uphill via La Raggiaz and stop for lunch at the 'Statue de La Vierge Lacoux'. From here the descent is never too steep and we thought it would have been nice to finish with such mind-blowing scenery. The view from the Cascade de la Charabotte is fabulous (we were not expecting there to be water flowing over the edge — as this was the famous scorching summer of 2026 — but there was water; so that made it all the better!).

All-in-all, put this one high on your list. Avoid the mistakes that we made (where you can see we back-tracked on two occassions). Take plenty of water as the villages had no 'eau potable', although we were 'saved' by a friendly and helpful French girl working at the 'Centre d’Art Contemporain de Lacoux' (she let us fill our water bottles in their kitchen, and we also enjoyed our packed lunch in the rear garden area).

You will not be dissapointed!
